Miss Aruba Not Suing Miss Universe Organizers
ORANJESTAD, Aruba – Miss Aruba Dianne Croes has issued a statement today that she will not sue any members of the Miss Universe Organization, following the incident that happened at the Miss Universe Pageant being held at the Atlantis Paradise Island in Nassau, Bahamas on September 5, 2009.
The incident happened during the finale of the coronation night, when it was announced that Miss Sweden Renate Cerljen was first runner-up and Miss Aruba was the new Miss Universe. However, before Miss Universe 2008 Dayana Mendoza could pass the crown to the new Miss Universe, one of the judges went up to the stage to talk to the show's hosts. The producers then decided to cut to commercial break, while the judges and the organizers conferred as to what should be done to rectify a huge error.
The error it turns out was that due to a glitch in the system used to tabulate the votes, the wrong winner was announced. It would be a good fifteen minutes more before the show could continue, during which all the other 79 contestants (minus the top 5) were asked to repeat the opening number (which was a dance interpretation of Lady GaGa's hugely popular song Pokerface) in their swimwear to entertain the audience, which was getting restless at that time.
However, in the middle of the Pokerface number, the song was cut and Rhianna's much older hit Umbrella began playing instead, apparently due to a technical problem. This caused confusion among the swimsuit-wearing beauties not only because they did not know the steps to Rhianna's Umbrella, but also because Umbrella has a much faster beat than Pokerface.
The girls decided to just continue using the dance steps for Pokerface, but they had to speed it up to match Umbrella's beat. The crowd went wild at this ingenuity pulled off by the ravishing beauties, and the audience did a standing ovation once the song was finished.

After another commercial break, the judges were now ready to make their announcement. They announced that the actual winner of the pageant was Miss Venezuela Stefania Fernandez, who was initially announced as the second runner up. To everyone's surprise, Miss Venezuela came up on the stage looking a bit disheveled, with messed-up hair and runny mascara, as she apparently had been crying through the whole Pokerface/Umbrella number. Thankfully, a quick-thinking make-up artist (who incidentally was the make artist of Miss Aruba) came up on stage and fixed Miss Venezuela up in a record 2.5 minutes! The crown was then put on a thoroughly refreshed and glowing Miss Venezuela, who then took her walk down the stage while doing the beauty queen hand wave.
In an investigation following the incident, it was found out that the tabulation error was caused when one of the judges had to step out and go to the ladies' room to fix her hair. The judge accidently tripped on a wire connecting the input machine to the tabulation machine, causing the input machine to feed the wrong data to the tabulation machine. The whole set-up had to be reconfigured and because of this delay prompted the event organizers to send out on stage all the other beauties to perform Pokerface/Umbrella to fill the gap.
In an interview with Miss Aruba Dianne Croes, she said that she is not going to file a lawsuit because she believes that no matter how embarrassing it was for her, it was all an unfortunate accident that nobody intended to happen. She declined to comment however, on whether a settlement was reached. When asked if she will join again next year, she just smiled and did the beauty queen hand wave.
