“There’s no stopping
her. Once she sets her mind on something, she wouldn’t rest until she gets it.”
Madonna’s husband Guy Ritchie said these when four months ago, the Material
Girl announced plans to scale the highest peak in the world, Mount Everest.
Critics refused to take her seriously, with some of them saying that the famous 51-year
old singer is in no condition at all to try to scale the equally famous peak,
while others believed that the announcement was just a publicity stunt that
would prelude the possible release of another Madonna album.
Madonna
however, was serious when she made that announcement. Two weeks later, she
hired three personal trainers, all of whom had been to Mount Everest at various
times, to begin her training for the planned trek to the mountain. John Ayers
is a renowned martial arts and tai chi practitioner, and he would be in charge
of the Material Girl's mental conditioning and meditation training. For her
physical training, she hired Susan Lee, who specializes in customized physical
training targeting specific muscle groups of the body to maximize muscle
strength. Lee is also an accomplished swimmer and she would devise endurance
exercises for Madonna as well.
Then
she hired former Army Major LeRock Martin who is an expert in survival
training, and has trained soldiers for nearly 15 years, before deciding to put
up a fitness center in New Jersey. In addition, Madonna hired as consultant the
renowned nutritionist Juniper Johnson, to help her monitor her food intake to
ensure that she is properly nourished during her rigorous training.
Madonna
was ready by the end of her third month of training, at which time she and her
husband flew to Nepal, to begin her acclimatization. She was scheduled to start
her ascent on September 2, during which she will be joined by her three
Nepalese guides, as well as two videographers who will document every step of
her journey. Her husband will stay at a hotel in Calico, 4,000 meters below
Mount Everest's peak, to await her return.
"Today,
I begin my journey", was all the singer said to the members of the press who
came to witness the start of her ascent to the peak of Mount Everest. By her
side was her husband, and after exchanging a few words, Madonna hugged and
kissed him before turning away to begin her journey. The ascent was scheduled
to last for fifteen days, after which Madonna's group would head back and begin
the journey home, a journey that would last ten more days.
Today,
correspondents eagerly awaiting word at base camp were informed via short-wave
radio transmission, that Madonna's party has reached the peak of Mount Everest.
A very excited Guy Ritchie rushed to base camp to address the press, telling
everyone how happy he is that his wife was able to finally realize her dream of
conquering the mighty mountain.
"I
am very happy for her extraordinary achievement today. I'm still a little bit
worried though, because it would be ten more days before they can get here. I
just can't wait to see her again," Ritchie said. So far, there hasn't been
anything happening that is of major concern, and it would appear that Madonna's
party would have a comparatively easy time going down the mountain. Full coverage
of the journey is scheduled to air on Animal Planet one week after Madonna's
return.
