The
San Francisco Giants won
the World Series on Monday night, beating the Texas Rangers 3-2 in a tense Game
5 and taking the crown and scepter home to the city by the Bay for the first
time.
Monday
night's victory was long overdue – the Giants last wore the crown and twirled
the World Series scepter in 1912, almost a century ago. Since then they have
been to 88 World Series Championships which they all lost despite the presence
of such baseball giants Willie Mays, Barry Bonds and Juan Marichal.
''This
group deserved it, faithful from the beginning. We're proud and humbled by the
achievement,'' says Giants general manager Brian Sabean.
It
was a close fight. The Rangers and Giants were tied at the fourth inning of
game 5. Then Rangers' Cliff Lee struck out Pat Burrell to keep the runners put, but Cody
Ross began hopping home as soon as Edgar Renteria connected, sending a drive
that kept sailing and landed over the left-center field wall.
And just like that, all the Giants' past troubles seemed like
ancient history.
The Giants won their previous title when they played in New York
at the Polo Grounds. That's where Mays raced back for perhaps the most famous
catch of all time.
They
moved West in 1914 and had tried ever since to escape a sort of big league
Alcatraz - the place where teams get stuck for decades as also-rans. The Red
Sox and White Sox got free, not so the Cubs and Indians. And after
almost a century, the Giants are free as well.
Many Giants
fans are wondering how they were able to do it. In an interview with Sabean
after the game, he said that "I believe it was our rigorous training that
finally paid off. We trained with the best trainers, and we trained everyday for at least a month before the games."
"And no, we did not hire the services of a witch doctor! I did
not go to Mbutu the Witch Doctor's office last month to ask for his help. We didn't
go out and have coffee to talk "business". I did not go to his office again two
weeks ago to finalize our deal. I did not bring a rare fruit as offering. I did
not tell my team to not take a bath one week before the games, as instructed by
the powerful Mbutu the Witch Doctor. I did not climb the stadium steps up and down 100 times while reciting a chant given to me by Mbutu. And no, I am not going to meet him downtown
tonight to settle the balance of our deal," Sabean said as he got up, went to
his car, and drove downtown.
