Facebook plans to capitalize on its more than 200 million mobile users by building a mobile phone. The notion of a Facebook phone had been rumored for a few months, and on Wednesday, CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg's secretary confirmed that they are indeed building a Facebook phone.
Facebook "just hit this milestone recently, of 200 million people actively using Facebook mobile across all mobile platforms. Compared to Android, iPhone -– this is a much bigger footprint than" any one phone or operating system, Zuckerberg's secretary said.
"The only footprint that's bigger than that is the mobile Web itself."
"Our approach is to build a platform to capitalize on this big footprint," Zuckberberg's secretary said. "We saw about 65 million people last year on their mobile devices, so this has grown quite a bit in the last year."
Mark Zuckerberg's secretary further revealed that they initially wanted to partner with Samsung to create the Facebook phone, but the initial deal turned sour when it was found out that Samsung was cooking up a similar deal with Friendster.
"We decided that we have enough resources to build our own phone. We are already past the initial stages of creating an entirely new mobile OS that we will use on the FB phone, and we are now ready to start creating a design for the actual phone," said Mark Zuckerberg's secretary.
The phone, targeted to be released in late 2012 or early 2013 will "completely revolutionize the mobile lifestyle" and will "look and feel like nothing anyone has ever seen or felt before".
The much talked-about phone will apparently include some of the most loved features of Facebook itself, such as customizable privacy settings and wall-to-wall communication, as well as games such as Farmville, and Mafia Wars.
"Mobile phone users will be delighted by Facebook phone's capability to "poke" friends, tag pictures of friends, and the neverending wall of status updates and notifications. We're sure Facebook phone will be such a hit. Everyone should watch out for its release in late 2012 or early 2013!"
