Portman is set to star in a remake of the hit movie Sleepless in Seattle, but she will be topless throughout the whole
movie, prompting critics to call the film Topless
in Seattle.
Natalie will play the role of Annie Reed (originally played by Meg Ryan), a Baltimore based newspaper writer who hears about the story of Sam Baldwin (originally played by Tom Hanks) on the radio. Sam Baldwin, a Chicago architect, has lost his wife to cancer. He and his young son Jonah move to Seattle, Washington to make a fresh start, but Sam is still disconsolate. On Christmas Eve, Jonah calls into a national radio advice show and persuades his father to go on the air with him to talk about how much he misses his wife. Thousands of women around the country, touched by Sam's story, send him letters. One letter is from Annie Reed, engaged to a nice man named Walter, who feels that there is something missing.
Meg Ryan won the 1993 Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in this movie. Natalie in an interview said that although they are going to do a remake of Sleepless in Seattle, she does not want to portray the character the same way Meg Ryan did it, that is why she is doing it topless.
"I like being topless. I have done it before, and I will do it again," Natalie said.
Steven Spielberg, who will direct this movie, said that he likes the idea of Natalie being topless in this movie.
"When they first mentioned it to me, I immediately liked it. I have seen Natalie Portman topless before, and I liked it. I have already asked the screenplay writers to work Natalie's being topless into the story," Spielberg said.
In this remake, the character of Annie Reed will have stage four cancer who has undergone multiple chemotherapy sessions, making her completely bald.
